This is some my personal musings along with compilations, from various sources, on the mythos/connection between Gnosticism among other spiritual traditions; and the humanoid fish/reptilian/amphibious 'beings' that can go by such names as: Mermaids, Mermen, Merfolk, Dagon, Sirens, Ningyo,Naga, Suvannamaccha, Naiads, Oannes, Nommo, and more.
There is no doubt that multiple civilizations and many people have stories of encountering amphibious/fish like humanoids that live in different bodies of water. I have never had such an encounter personally but would like to explore if these are just fairy tales or there something more to these stories.
Let’s start with what these beings could possibly be:
“Then we have the spirits. The spirits are the powers that can't be seen except with second sight. They can't be heard except with second hearing. They can't be touched except with the second touch. These second senses are powers we all have and use without even knowing about it. Some people become very successful through the use of the second senses. They call themselves readers and advisors of spiritual truth. Lucky Hoodoo can make you into one of these if you want to do that also. But it is all done by the spirits working with you and for you. That is why Voudoo power secrets depend upon the spirits. Let me tell you more about these spirits. Long ago there was a big island between Africa and Haiti called "Atlantis" and because of many earthquakes, it sank under the ocean called the "Atlantic." One time there was a big school of magick on the island of this same Atlantis and the magicians were very powerful. What they didn't know when they were alive they soon learned after they died. The island, as we said, just sank under the ocean and the magicians went down with it. But they didn't die, they just became spirits with fish-like bodies and frog-like bodies, and snake-like bodies. They did this so they could continue their work under the ocean, in their big temple down at the bottom of the sea. They are still down there, but they are also spirits and as spirits they are able to do a lot of things. In fact they know how to do more things now than they knew a long time ago. The older they get the more powerful they get. Now, under the sea there is a great forest with all kinds of sea-trees and seabushes, and sea-plants growing in it. This is the great woods of the old island of Atlantis. There is an old king who is a very powerful spirit-magician and he is the "Master of the Words on the Island Under the Sea." We call him "Maitre" or "Ma-Trn for short. He is the king of the spirits on his island and he is a very powerful god of Voudoo. He has given to me a group of His spirits to help those who are making use of this course to become powerful. I call His spirits the "Hoo-Spirits," because they make up one half of the team of spirits in lucky Hoodoo…The spirits of the sea-magicians come from the west angle of the spirit world and are from the element of water. Everything must depend upon water if it is to live and grow, so it is with the spirits and their projects…”- The Gnostic Voudon Workbook
Other stories that have people 'dying' then becoming Mermaids:
The legend of Thessalonike:
“The legend states that Alexander the Great, in his quest for the Fountain of Immortality, retrieved with great exertion a flask of immortal water with which he bathed his sister's hair, Thessalonike. When Alexander died his grief-stricken sister attempted to end her life by jumping into the sea. Instead of drowning, however, Thessalonike became a mermaid passing judgment on mariners throughout the centuries and across the seven seas.
Rusalkas are the Slavic counterpart of the Greek sirens and naiads. The nature of rusalkas varies among folk traditions, but according to ethnologist D.K. Zelenin they all share a common element: they are the restless spirits of the unclean dead. They are usually the ghosts of young women who died a violent or untimely death, perhaps by murder or suicide, before their wedding and especially by drowning. Rusalkas are said to inhabit lakes and rivers. They appear as beautiful young women with long pale green hair and pale skin, suggesting a connection with floating weeds and days spent underwater in faint sunlight. They can be seen after dark, dancing together under the moon and calling out to young men by name, luring them to the water and drowning them.” -Wiki
So are Mer-folk former humans that have physically ‘died’ and were able to take the form of these beings in a physical/semi-physical form; or are they ‘their own’ race of physical beings? Maybe both, if everything is consciousness/energy, then maybe they were powerful enough to manifest another type of body to interact on the physical plane. Water and its electromagnetic properties, could have been crucial for this body to be able to exist so that is where they remained. Maybe after time they became more trapped in matter and now are “material” beings…
Regardless of what the state of their bodies could be, another question is: Did these sorcerers of Atlantis, if actually existing, bring about its destruction and other cataclysmic earth changes and do they rule to this day? Could this be were the Oannes and Dagon came from? Discarnate Atlantean sorcerers whose spirit/consciousness then took the form of fish-like bodies. Later, giving 'advanced'information to the 'human' survivors of the cataclysm that had forgot the past and whom worshiped them as gods.
If these creatures are ‘evil’ and work against humanity then possibly this trailer from the movie Dagon, interpreted from HP Lovecraft’s book, may be a good representation of that.
The wiki definition/history of Dagon/Oannes:
“Dagon (Phoenician: 𐤃𐤂𐤍, romanized: Dāgūn; Hebrew: דָּגוֹן Dāgōn) or Dagan (Sumerian: 𒀭𒁕𒃶, romanized: dda-gan) is an ancient Mesopotamian and ancient Canaanite deity. He appears to have been worshipped as a fertility god in Ebla, Assyria, Ugarit, and among the Amorites.
A long-standing association with a Canaanite word for "fish" (as in Hebrew: דג, Tib. /dɔːg/), perhaps going back to the Iron Age, has led to an interpretation as a "fish-god", and the association of "merman" motifs in Assyrian art (such as the "Dagon" relief found by Austen Henry Layard in the 1840s). The god's name was, however, more likely derived from a word for "grain", suggesting that he was in origin associated with fertility and agriculture.”
The "fish" etymology was accepted in 19th and early 20th century scholarship. This led to the association with the "merman" motif in Assyrianand Phoenician art (e.g. Julius Wellhausen, William Robertson Smith), and with the figure of the Babylonian Oannes (Ὡάννης) mentioned by Berossus (3rd century BC)..
In the 13th century, David Kimhi interpreted the odd sentence in 1 Samuel 5.2–7 that "only Dagon was left to him" to mean "only the form of a fish was left", adding: "It is said that Dagon, from his navel down, had the form of a fish (whence his name, Dagon), and from his navel up, the form of a man, as it is said, his two hands were cut off." The Septuagint text of 1 Samuel 5.2–7 says that both the hands and the head of the image of Dagon were broken off.

The Dogon Tribe:
In the African, Mali area, the Dogon Tribe supposedly had great knowledge of ‘astrology’, particularly about Sirius A and B. Astrology and Astronomy were studied as one congruent science then (and now if properly understood), both being a part of the mind, hence real Astronomy is actually Science of the Mind, as the stars/space is the 'physical' reflection of The Mind. The Dogons say they were taught this information by a fish-like humanoid race:
“The key spiritual figures in the religion were the Nummo/Nommo twins. According to Ogotemmêli's description of them, the Nummo, whom he also referred to as the Serpent, were amphibians that were often compared to serpents, lizards, chameleons, and occasionally even sloths (because of their being slow moving and having a shapeless neck). They were also described as fish capable of walking on land; while they were on land, the Nummo stood upright on their tails. The Nummos' skin was primarily green, but, like the chameleon, it sometimes changed colours. It was said to at times have all the colours of the rainbow.
In other instances, the Nummo were referred to as "Water Spirits". Although the Nummo were identified as being "Dieu d'eau" (gods of water) by Marcel Griaule, Ogotemmêli identified the Nummo as hermaphrodites and they appeared on the female side of the Dogon sanctuary. They were primarily symbolized by the sun, which was a female symbol in the religion. In the Dogon language, the sun's name (nay) had the same root as "mother" (na) and "cow" (nā). They were symbolized by the colour red, a female symbol.”-Wiki
According to Robert K.G. Temple in The Sirius Mystery:
The name Nommo comes from a Dogon word linked to the root nomo, "to make one drink."
It is said: "The Nommo divided his body among men to feed them; that is why it is also said that as the universe 'had drunk of his body' the Nommo also made men drink. He also gave all his life principles to human beings."
"The Dogon say that they were taught by intelligent amphibious beings called the Nommo - the term used in both a singular and plural form - who came from Sirius thousands of years ago in a circular, spinning ark. Their tradition is a precise correlation with the Sumerian tradition of the Oannes.
During Dogon ceremonies the Sirius system is portrayed on a checkered blanket, recalling the tessellated or checkerboard pattern that the Freemasons favor for their floors: is this a reference to Sirius?"
"The Dogon got their cosmogony and cosmology directly from the three-eyed invaders who visited long ago…
The three-eyed invaders are mute and deaf and telepathic, could not breathe our atmosphere, had the elongated misshapen skull of Ikhnaton and emanated from a planet in the star-system Sirius…
Although they had no hands, but had instead, pincer claws such as a crab has, they were great builders…"
The Dogon call the Nommo "the Shapers of the world"-note the similarity to Phil Dick's concept of "the Builders."
“Our world is still secretly ruled by the hidden race descended from Ikhnaton, and his knowledge is the information of the Macro-Mind itself... From Ikhnaton this knowledge passed to Moses, and from Moses to Elijah, the Immortal Man, who became Christ. But underneath all the names there is only one Immortal Man, and we are that man."
Of Ikhnaton's three-eyed kin, Dick alter-ego Fat observes, "My God... These are the original builders...," to which another character replies, "We have never stopped... We still build. We built this world, this space-time matrix."
In VALIS PK Dick also mentions: "They manifested themselves as cyborg entities: wrapped up in glass bubbles staggering under masses of technological gear... Soviet technicians could be seen, hurrying to repair malfunctions of the sophisticated technological communications apparatus enclosing the three-eyed people…"
So PK Dick and the Dogon considers these 'beings' the builders of this 'reality/matrix.' Then again if they were a malevolent group trying to infiltrate and subject/rule another group, then it would be very plausible to think they are lying to us about being our "gods/creators". The different variations of head-ware that seem to be made for larger/elongated skulls could be a hint for everyone.
"The priest-historian Berossus chronicled the account of Oannes, half-man, half-fish, who surfaced from the Persian Gulf to instruct the early inhabitants of Mesopotamia in the arts of civilization.
Oannes was said to be one who was possessed of an insight into letters, sciences, and every kind of art.
Oannes was but an ancient Greek form of Ea (En-Ki), the star god of the Sumerians.
- Were the Sumerians so overwhelmingly inspired by the starburst that they were stimulated into creating writing, law, education, and many of the essential concepts of science?
- Or had they received some overt physical assistance and instruction from survivors who might have been escaping the supernova, the death of their sun?
Reference to a god who was said to be half-man, half-fish suggests, once again, an amphibious intelligence.
Later, we may recall a great teacher of righteousness, Jesus, a "fisher of men," who taught the Way and whose followers identified themselves to one another by making the sign of a fish...
It may be speculated that the fish symbol of the secret society that Philip K. Dick felt had contacted him may have derived from the Oannes/Nommo connection.
The fish symbol, stood on its head, also portrays a representation of the fertility cult of Isis, and it is even possible that the christian fish symbol is similarly derived, since it may be argued that christianity is at core a Mystery Religion of Osiris-Sun God worship, transmogrified by claims of an historical uniqueness that it specifically does not possess."
"As Aleister Crowley wrote in The Book of Thoth:
In this card [Death, a Tarot card] the symbol of the fish is paramount; the fish (il pesce, as they call him in Naples and many other places) and the serpent [symbolizing the Messiah] are the two principal objects of worship in cults which taught the doctrines of resurrection or reincarnation.
Thus we have Oannes and Dagon, fish gods, in western Asia; in many other parts of the world are similar cults. Even in Christianity, Christ was represented as a fish.
The Greek word IXThUS, "which means fish, and very aptly symbolizes Christ," as Browing reminds one, was supposed to be a notariqon, the initials of a sentence meaning "JesusChrist Son of God, Savior."
Nor is it an accident that St. Peter was a fisherman. The Gospels, too, are full of miracles involving fish, and the fish is sacred to Mercury, because of its cold-bloodedness, its swiftness and its brilliance.”
There is moreover the sexual symbolism of the ‘Jesus Fish’/ Vesica Pisces, (Twin Circles) representing symbolically and geometrically the female genitals, which is literally the portal that brings humans/consciousness/soul etc into the physical world. Giving more reason to the relation to fertility cults.
Time to put things together with some other PK Quotes from Exegesis explaining in multiple layers the Nommo/Oannes/Dagon relation to the Mind:
- The name of the healthy twin, hyperuniverse I, is Nommo. [Nommo is represented in a fish form, the early Christian fish.] The name of the sick twin, hyperuniverse II, is Yurugu. These names are known to the Dogon people of western Sudan in Africa.
- The primordial source of all our religions lies with the ancestors of the Dogon tribe, who got their cosmogony and cosmology directly from the three-eyed invaders who visited long ago. The three-eyed invaders are mute and deaf and telepathic, could not breathe our atmosphere, had the elongated misshapen skull of Ikhnaton, and emanated from a planet in the star-system Sirius. Although they had no hands, but had, instead, pincer claws such as a crab has, they were great builders. They covertly influence our history toward a fruitful end.
- TWO SOURCE COSMOGONY: The One was and was-not, combined, and desired to separate the was-not from the was. So it generated a diploid sac which contained, like an eggshell, a pair of twins, each an androgyny, spinning in opposite directions (the Yin and Yang of Taoism, with the One as the Tao). The plan of the One was that both twins would emerge into being (was-ness) simultaneously; however, motivated by a desire to be (which the One implanted in both twins), the counter-clockwise twin broke through the sac and separated prematurely; i.e. before full term. This was the dark or Yin twin. Therefore it was defective. At full term the wiser twin emerged. Each twin formed a unitary entelechy, a single living organism made of psyche and soma, still rotating in opposite directions to each other. The full term twin, called Form I by Parmenides, advanced correctly through its growth stages, but the prematurely born twin, called Form II, languished.
The next step in the One's plan was that the Two would become the Many, through their dialetic interaction. From them as hyperuniverses they projected a hologram-like interface, which is the pluriform universe we creatures inhabit. The two sources were to intermingle equally in maintaining our universe, but Form II continued to languish toward illness, madness and disorder. These aspects she projected into our universe.
It was the One's purpose for our hologramatic universe to serve as a teaching instrument by which a variety of new lives advanced until ultimately they would be isomorphic with the One. However, the decaying condition of hyperuniverse II introduced malfactors which damaged our hologramatic universe. This is the origin of entropy, undeserved suffering, chaos and death, as well as the Empire, the Black Iron Prison; in essence, the aborting of the proper health and growth of the life forms within the hologramatic universe. Also, the teaching function was grossly impaired, since only the signal from the hyperuniverse I was information-rich; that form II had become noise.
The psyche of hyperuniverse I sent a micro-form of itself into hyperuniverse II to attempt to heal it. The micro-form was apparent in our hologramatic universe as Jesus Christ. However, hyperuniverse II, being deranged, at once tormented, humiliated, rejected and finally killed the micro-form of the healing psyche of her healthy twin. After that, hyperuniverse II continued to decay into blind, mechanical, purposeless causal processes. It then became the task of Christ (more properly the Holy Spirit) to either rescue the life forms in the hologramatic universe, or abolish all influences on it emanating from II. Approaching its task with caution, it prepared to kill the deranged twin, since she cannot be healed; i.e. she will not allow herself to be healed because she does not not understand that she is sick. This illness and madness pervades us and makes us idiots living in private, unreal worlds. The original plan of the One can only be realized now by the division of hyperuniverse I into two healthy hyperuniverses, which will transform the hologramatic universe into the successfull teaching machine it was designed to be. We will experience this as the 'Kingdom of God.'
Within time, hyperuniverse II remains alive: 'The Empire never ended.' But in eternity, where the hyperuniverses exist, she has been killed -- of necessity -- by the healthy twin of hyperuniverse I, who is our champion. The One grieves for this death, since the One loved both twins; therefore the information of the Mind consists of a tragic tale of the death of a woman, the undertones of which generate anguish into all the creatures of the hologrammatic universe without their knowing why. This grief will depart when the healthy twin undergoes mitosis and the 'Kingdom of God' arrives. The machinery for this transformation -- the procession within time from the Age of Iron to the Age of Gold -- is at work now; in eternity it is already accomplished.

Bonus various ‘historical’ accounts from multiple cultures of mer-creatures from wiki:
Naga: nāga (IAST: nāga; Devanāgarī: नाग) or Nagi (f. of nāga; IAST: nāgī; Devanāgarī: नागी) are divine, semi-divine deities, or a semi-divine race of half-human half-serpent beings that reside in the netherworld (Patala) and can occasionally take human form. They are principally depicted in three forms: wholly human with snakes on the heads and necks; common serpents, or as half-human half-snake beings"
If you get to go to many of the temples in South East Asia, specifically Angkor Wat, they have Naga engravings on various parts of them and temples that were built for humans to meet with them according to guides. This same theme is very similar in 'Mayan' of Mexico/central america. Some photos of both locations can be found at my photography
Kukulkan/ Quetzalcoatl :The depiction of the Feathered Serpent is present in other cultures of Mesoamerica. Kukulkan is closely related to the deity Qʼuqʼumatz of the Kʼicheʼ people and to Quetzalcoatl of Aztec mythology.
The Greek myth of Medusa who possibly was a race that had technology weapons that could freeze/ petrify people.
"Sir Patrick Spens Ballads,” depict a mermaid speaking to the doomed ships. In some versions, she tells them they will never see land again; in others, she claims they are near shore, which they are wise enough to know means the same thing. Mermaids can also be a sign of approaching rough weather,[
In one story, the Laird of Lorntie went to aid a woman he thought was drowning in a lake near his house; a servant of his pulled him back, warning that it was a mermaid, and the mermaid screamed at them that she would have killed him if it were not for his servant. But mermaids could occasionally be more beneficent; e.g., teaching humans cures for certain diseases. Mermen have been described as wilder and uglier than mermaids, with little interest in humans.
Mami Water (Lit. "Mother of the Water") are water spirits venerated in west, central and southern Africa, and in the African diaspora in the Caribbean and parts of North and South America. They are usually female, but are sometimes male. They are regarded as diabolical beings, and are often femme fatale, luring men to their deaths. The Persian word "برایم بمان" or "maneli" means "mermaid"
The alchemist Paracelsus's treatise Liber de Nymphis (1566) spawned the idea that the water elemental (or water sprite) could acquire an immortal soul through marriage with a human; this led to the writing of De la Motte Fouqué's novella Undine, and eventually to the most famous literary mermaid tale of all, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid".
he goddess Atargatis, mother of Assyrian queen Semiramis, loved a mortal (a shepherd) and unintentionally killed him. Ashamed, she jumped into a lake and took the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine beauty. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaid—human above the waist, fish below—although the earliest representations of Atargatis showed her as a fish with a human head and arm, similar to the Babylonian god Ea. The Greeks recognized Atargatis under the name Derketo.
One Thousand and One Nights collection includes several tales featuring "sea people", such as "Jullanâr the Sea-born and Her Son King Badr Bâsim of Persia
The mermaid falls in love with a human prince,[d] and also longs for an eternal soul like humans, despite the shorter life-span. The two cravings are intertwined: only by achieving true love will her soul bind with a human's and become everlasting. But the mermaid's fish-tail poses an insurmountable obstacle for enticing humans, and the sea-witch offers a potion to transform into human form, at a price (the mermaid's tongue and beautiful voice). The mermaid endures the excruciating pain of having human legs, and despite her inability to speak, almost succeeds in wedding the prince, but for a twist of fate.[e] The mermaid is doomed unless she stabs the prince with a magic knife before his marriage. But she does not have the resolve and dies the mermaid way, dissolving into foam.(Plasmate?)"

Are these elongated skulls still around today?
The question we always ask ourselves when presented with this type of information is:
Is it just an imaginative Eggrgore, is it symbolic, or is it literal?
If everything is consciousness and all is mind then all could exist simultaneously. This entire 'reality' being archetypal symbols manifesting themselves in the 'physical' realm.
The Holographic Fractal Dream:
"The universe is information and we are stationary in it, not three-dimensional and not in space or time. The information fed to us we hypostatize into the phenomenal world." PK Dick
The 'thought' always precedes the materialization, therefore symbols/myths will manifest themselves in the 'physical' realm. Whether we have control of it or not depends on our mental control and willpower.
With this information I like to think all of us have slowly gone through various stages of ‘being’ becoming more ‘material’ and less ‘spiritual’ with each ‘Cycle.’ The previous cycle we (true consciousness experiencing itself) possessed a ethereal/watery body that allowed us interaction in the 'physical realm.'
With each cycle comes major ‘physical realm’ changes/expansions.’ The Great Deluge and fall of Atlantis being examples and I believe happening much more recently then we could imagine. I believe we are in the‘lowest/most material’ Cycle 'now', which will rapidly and unexpectedly come to an end in ways none could imagine, as it will vary subjectively according to your thoughts words and deeds.
Like always think for yourself, question everything, and make your own reality. Don’t forget that philosophical thought is great but it must be balanced with harsh laws of the physical realm. Master yourself in all ways and learn as many practical worldly skills as you can.
